There is an interesting article at The Medical Futurist about companies applying virtual reality to fields including behavioral psychology, pain management, medical training, rehabilitation, and meditation.
The specific examples include treating anxieties, depression, and phobias; pain management; surgical training, planning, and assistance; education (learning human anatomy); exercise and rehabilitation; assisting people with physical disabilities; and meditation.
Virtual reality is in its infancy. This is going to get much more interesting as processing, storage, and communication capabilities continue to advance.
